I also cannot reproduce the bug. With the proper utf8 locale set, the UTF8 demo
displays fine in a regular uxterm and inside screen. I don't even need -U.

I just came across the same problem. It's easy to reproduce:
- I'm logged into a Debian system using ssh. My locale is en_US.utf8.
- If I enter some German umlauts
echo äöüß
I get the correct output:
äöüß
- Then I start screen and I can only safely enter äöü, when pressing ß

Ooops, sorry -U is what I meant
I'm not the screen maintainer, I just ran into this problem and found
that flag and thought it worthy of submission.
