Ah, see here:
http://packages.debian.org/mysql-client
experimental (misc): mysql database client binaries
4.1.7-2: i386
So it's really probable that experimental and unstable were mixed on your
system!

First, I not
Package: mysql-client
Version: 4.1.7-2
Followup-For: Bug #288400
I'm seeing this same problem with Debian unstable, no backports or
what have you. All ELF binaries that I feel confident running (i.e., I
have some idea what they do) such as 'mysql', 'mysqladmin',
'mysqldump' have this problem.
