I've been able to create a QEMU/KVM virtual machine image for autopkgtests:
$ mkdir -p ~/var/cache/sbuild/
$ cd /dev/shm
$ TMPDIR=/dev/shm mmdebstrap-autopkgtest-build-qemu \
--size=25G --boot=efi sid
