Jo, Just thought I'd mention I tested 2.6.39 now in unstable and am still getting the same problem. I tried to decompress a DVD image to an external USB drive and it gave this in syslog. Eventually things start to crash, a restart of GDM fails and I have to reboot. Unpacking the same files with 2.
