Sorry this follow-up is so late.
After putting the sleep in (see below) I still get about 3 fails in 10 boots.
Any further things I could try>

This is where I put the sleep :-
starting at line 139 of /etc/init.d/bluetooth
...

Have added 'sleep 1' in in Start section of ...init.d/bluetooth after
' log_daemon_msg "Starting $DESC" ' on Eeepc, haven't got access to
the others this week.
Will see how it goes after reboots, and report after a few.
