I add that I have noticed the same symptoms in the same configuration
(Debian Stretch Stable, via usb 2.0, same version of Xsane, same version
of the Gimp, …) excepted they were on an MP510 Canon AIO printer.

I've just migrated from Debian GNU/Linux Jessie to Debian GNU/Linux Stretch.
Jessie was regularly updated and was up-to-date at the migration.
Scribus 1.4.6 doesn't find anymore dejaVu fonts.
DejaVu fonts are found in LibreOffice 5.2.7.2 and in gnome fonts viewer.
