Well, I know how to solve my problem, but this doesn't help the
unexperienced user who might ditch Debian if wifi doesn't work and
install Ubuntu instead. Ubuntu supports non-free firmware during install.

Sorry, I only meant that the cursor doesn't invert colors. With a grey
cursor, black chars are still visible as black, but I prefer the
inverting behavior of Emacs or gnome-terminal, which works for both
black cursor with black chars on white bg as well as white cursor with
white chars on black

The problems with the misc-fixed fonts mentioned above are not present
with emacs22.
