I found this bug today, too. My workaround was to set 'useSystemClassLoader' to 'false', adding this to the pom.xml: org.apache.maven.plugins maven-surefire-plugin 2.22.1 false With openjdk-8-jdk version 8u181-b13-1~deb9u1 the project compiled just fine.
