In particular, I was able to make the problem go away by executing
root@testmail:/var/spool/postfix/dev# mknod random c 1 8
root@testmail:/var/spool/postfix/dev# mknod urandom c 1 9

t would be nice for this step to go away
for all systems, not just ones mounting /usr from LVM/RAID.
