I confirm that I have nearly the same problem, except that g-s-d always crashes
with a segmentation fault on startup and can't be run even manually.
When using gnome-shell, the session crashes immediately.

Another workaround while waiting for package update seems to disable
attached modal dialogs with gconf-editor in /desktop/gnome/shell/windows,

I upgraded to cups-1.3.11-2 recently and since then the service boot
process is stopped because it asks for root password of my remote CUPS
server.
The server is still using an older version (1.3.8-1lenny4).
