Any update on this? It looks like there may have been a packaged
version here: http://people.debian.org/~mako/outgoing/libtemplate-perl/
at some point but it's no longer there and the latest version (2.2) is
still not in testing or unstable.

My mistake. This bug appears to be present in debian stable
(msttcorefonts 1.0.2) but is not present in unstable (msttcorefonts 1.2).
The config script in version 1.0.2 contains:
