I am experiencing the same behaviour, the GDM init script :
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# /etc/init.d/gdm start
Starting GNOME Display Manager: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~#
Starts fine calling the /usr/sbin/gdm directly, so the problem is in
the initscript.
Let me know if you need more information.

Yes, fglrx needs to be updated, it only supports Xorg 7.1 so far
according to ATI website. Reassigning and merging with other bugs.
