When I manually added user Debian-gdm to group video in /etc/group, gdm starts
up correctly now.

I am the reporter. It seems that somwhow I managed not to include the
message text for the bug.

Same problem here. It doesn't happen when I use C locale when logging
into GDM.
I can see that there is a zombie xkbcomp process that is spawned from
gnome-settings-daemon:
