Sorry for not responding more promptly, I was too busy with
various other things. Today I wanted to test the fix. However,
I am not that familiar with finding and testing kernels, so
after about an hour of trying to find the necessary information,

Reading the help offered by the install process, plus
a search on the internet, plus some experimentation helped
me discover the following workaround:
Adding either of the "noapic" or "acpi=off" options seems
to solve the problem.
I suspect noapic is preferable since it is mentioned
