There is no README file explaining how things work. I figured it out
after futzing around.
I suggest the following text in a README file:

To activate extensions copy them from
'/etc/mediawiki-extensions/extensions-available'
I upgraded KDE (to version 3.5.3)-- the bug is still there.
If it were me... I'd classified this bug as 'grave'. As is, the package is
unusable at *any* level of functionality.

Any case, I set to work on this myself and found a work around:

I've had the same problem as described above... but 'mv kmail kmail_old'
doesn't fix the problem for me.
The error message I got when starting kmail from the konsole was:
