On some systems the USB keyboard fails to initialize in time for the
boot menu. This makes it impossible to boot if one does not have a PS2
keyboard handy. It would be nice to have a timer to make it possible
to boot at all.

I had this problem on my EeePC 901 (swap on /dev/sdb1).
Solved it by creating /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume wtith:
RESUME=/dev/sdb1
then by running:
# mkswap /dev/sdb1
# swapon /dev/sdb1
# update-initramfs -u
