I often have 2-3 instances of RT open, is most of the memory released
again after doing the processing or does RT keep it around until it is
closed, which might contribute to the issue?

When saving a photo/applying the processing in about 5-10% of the cases my
system completely freezes. The system needs to be power cycled for recovery.
The RawTherapee status bar usually shows "amaze demosaicing" when this happens.
