I forgot to mention in the installation report that the sound did not work until I ran 'alsaconf'. An alternative to this was to - remove discover - add snd-intel8x0 and snd-pcm-oss to /etc/modules The second solution invalidated the need for alsaconf and thereby allowed programs like aumix
