This appears to the same as upstream ticket #10528
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/10528
Applying the disable NMI watchdog workaround has been successful on my
setup and provided a stable system over several (>10) boot cycles.

Roll back to 23.2+1-5 and then reinstall of 23.2+1-5.1 of packages
emacs23, emacs23-common and emacs23-bin-common resolved the issue.

Since upgrading to emacs23-common 23.2+1-5.1 (previously had

Package: evolution-exchange
Version: 2.26.3-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
evolution-exchange-storage crashes (segfault) when syncing folders with
exchange server or when downloading new messages. Reproducible every time (at
least on my system).
Problem started immed
but had been running for about 7
months and kept up-to-date.
Brute force workaround saved the day:
dpkg --purge docbook-xml
then run
apt-get dist-upgrade
again.
