This is indeed a pretty nasty oversight. The package should at least
function by default, especially in stable.
The following change, courtesy of the Ubuntu cacti-0.8.6i package,
fixes the problem:

The creation of the /var/spool/postfix directory for chroot purposes
does not include the files from /usr/lib/sasl2. This causes
"directory not found" errors when running chroot and using software
which depends on the sasl2 libraries, such as postfix-ldap.
