The system was also upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze.
Changing themes doesn't fix it. I've tried "fade-in" and "spacefun"

sorry I forgot to mention, that you have to clear "gdm kdm xdm" out of
X-*-Before. This produces the loop you've seen. As far as I investigated, the
initscript has two jobs to do.
1. on boot time stop the plymouth
2. on shutdown show the plymouth splash.

i've spotted today the same failure. After some investigation i found out, what
the problem is.
insserv links plymouth script to /etc/rc2.d/S01plymouth, this means, the script
will be executed as one of the firsts scripts in runlevel 2. I've fixed this
with adding $all to Required-Start in /
