Not long ago (Mandriva 2007, 2.6.18 or so) it was necessary to call XFlush() to
make moving objects that were placed on screen with XPutImage mov smoothly.
Long ago (Red Hat 9.0 2.4.20 or so) the screen would stay black until a call
was made
This bug was closed (I think) because the problem was fixed according
to some information that I can no longer recover.
That is however not true. When starting Debian squeeze or Debian sid
I still often get a black screen on my Compaq 6510b. When this
happens, I type (blindly) user (root) password

When rebooting I get a black screen sometimes when i915 is inserted by udev.
This happens almost always when rebooting from Windows XP. I boot into
terminal mode and I can log in on the black

When i915 is installed with modeset=1 it is not possible to run svgalib.
(System crashes but can be restored by starting X11)
I strongly prefer to run in terminal mode with svgalib and therefore
I use modes
