I manually copied /etc/hp/hplip.conf from another machine and the
hplip-gui stuff all works now.
After having looked around I have no idea why 1) this file is even in
libsane-hpaio rather than hplip or hplip-gui, 2) it is not insalled
when I purge hplip* and autoremove (thus removing libsane-hpaio
this is not confirm-able and seems to be a local issue I'm still
working out where it lies. This is not however a grave bug affecting
this package version as originally suspected. If there is a bug at all
its related to reinstalling after purge and rm -rf of all config dirs
and hplip.conf not being

The GUI components of HPLIP are failing to start on Debian 9.5
I had some serious SNAFU/FUBAR with cups/hplip and purged all pacakges,
removed all configs, killed all processes, did an upgrade to 9.5 from 9.4,
then reinstalled cups and

when I was trying to do a chroot/cross-install of Debian from Debian
onto another drive, and the error only further confused the situation
because it was not the correct error. It said this:
