I've done some additional research, and it seems to be a matter of permissions:
using the scanner under the root account (both with scanimage and under GUI
programs) works like a charm.

Sorry, forgot to clarify that: I read that bug report too, but I don't have
that package (scanbuttond) installed here so this seems to be a different
problem. I don't use the buttons anyway (that is, when this works, i.e. in
Ubuntu).
