You're right, ruby is such a mess ...
It can be wrapped using a DateTime.respond_to?(:parse). This will return
false for 1.8 and true for 1.9:

with the provides packages I could update at least the external
x2go packages from http://packages.x2go.org/debian without
problems. I'll test it with regular debian updates if there are
some available.
