After further investigation I now think that this is a bug and have reported
it upstream [1]. I used the description from the initial poster here because
I did not feel I could match it with my own english, I hope that was OK.

Hi,
I am not able to reproduce it here (4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-6). Also, I am not
entirely sure but it seems as if this may have been related to KDE bug #85685
[1] which was fixed in KDE 3.4.

I'm having the same problem here, since my system specification differs a bit
