There are several points in XFWM changelog that looks suspicious (like
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8898 applied in 4.12), but no
clue what to investigate further.

runs) had /dev/root linked to /dev/sda2 (incorrectly).
I deleted, but still no change...
any thoughts?
For now everything works with [ ! -e ...] commented.

For what it's worth: newer [unstable] version of xfdesktop works
as expected. So unless it applies to stable, the bug can be considered
smashed...
