Some additional information: I suspect this issue is with the
xserver-xorg-video-intel package. Also see this thread:

I am not quite sure what package the problem is in, but I suspect it is the
integrated Intel graphics driver.
This started happening two days ago when I rebooted my netbook.
The backlight turns off some 15-20 seconds into the boot process. This
