the situation is getting better if I force not to install the
recommended packages. Hence, imagemagick still wants to install a lot of
packages I don't understand (still a lot of X and gtk stuff).
I don't think, this is just bug http://bugs.debian.org/474993 where
skipping recommendations works.

This is a sudden change, until now, imagemagick could be used
standalone. An update right now from versions 7:6.2.4.5.dfsg1-2 to
7:6.3.7.9.dfsg1-2+b1 wants to install half gnome etc (see below). I
think this is a little to much, especially for a headless server.
