I no longer have the (damaged and useless) installation attempt
that led to this report. I recall that when I succeeded in
supplying brcmfmac43340-sdio.bin, the next installation attempt
presented the same type of error message, asking for brcmfmac43340-sdio.txt
I found a file with that name o
le for brcm/brcmfmac43340-sdio.bin

I'm not sure how you internally characterize these things, but
I think this goes with the "calamares" installer, not the debian
installer.
package: installer
debian-10.7.0-i386-netinst.iso
This installation was attempted on an old x86 laptop, for which
the native wifi is non-functional without "non free" drivers. I
worked around the wifi problem by using a usb wifi dongle, which
configures and works correctly for the first part of

installing debian-live-10.7.0-i386-kde+nonfree.iso using the live option
and installing from the booted memory stick.
On an old x86 notebook, installation fails with an informative message,
"bootloader-config failed, package grub-efi-amd64 is not available."
this looks like

Installing on an old x86 cpu which requires "non free" drivers, the
installer correctly quotes the needed driver's name. Bravo. but...
1) it suggests adding removable media, which is basically impossible
in the context of the installer running from a memory stick

This applies to the current installer image
debian-live-10.7.0-i386-cinnamon+nonfree.iso
running the current installer I got to "installation failed"
and went back to the main installer menu. There were three options
listed under "save debug logs"
1) floppy
2) web
