5.8.0 has just been released.

The most important change for Debian would be Minetest Game no longer being
included by default. I'm not sure how this will be handled with Debian
specific customizations and the Debian repository.
I've given up on solving this issue. I hope that, if someone else was in
the same boat I was in, the issue gets resolved.
