Can you ssh into the box after it locks up? If so please attach the
output of `dmesg`.
If you can't ssh into the box start something like this before launching
the screen saver:

resize2fs is the way to go for resizing ext partitions. If I create a
package that just contains ext2prepare would you be willing to remove
this package? Having an unmaintained ext2resize around may potentially
be dangerous as ext2/3/4 move forward.

Try turning SAVE_VBE_STATE and POST_VIDEO in /etc/default/acpi-support
to false. This fixes the issue for me.
