Incidentally, Debian/Ubuntu distribution ofers either "tex-gyre" or
"fonts-texgyre" packages, the former containing fonts in the Type 1
format, the latter -- fon

OpenType TeX Gyre fonts.
The problem is that the ligatures are named

etc while display engines like poppler, as well as the orginal
PostScript fonts, use
