However, the second half of the patch above is still needed to grab CA
certs from /etc/ssl/certs. Attaching just that part.

Please explain the output in the manual.
1) Where the information about the magic FS numbers can be
read (those: 1b, 83 ...). URL? some other manual?
2) What does the plus sign mean at the end of some numbers

Hello,
I experienced the same issue. I updated from the sun-java5-* packages to
openjdk-6-* on my Debian Lenny (using pinning), but the /etc/alternatives/*
symlinks (including those related to the *-javaplugin.so alternatives) were
not updated.
I ran the following command:
apt-get --purge rem
clone 492863 -1
retitle -1 update-manager: does not install packages that 'apt-get
dist-upgrade' would install
reassign -1 update-manager
block by -1
thanks

I would gladly do that, but I don't know how to. Please help me to help you.
I do have programming experience, however, "make" is still magic to me.

Looks like the culprit is the python script that update-notifier
launches to discover if there are updates available:

Oops! I accidentally included the wrong ".config" file. One of the perils of
overnight building several different kernels and submitting the bug report from
a different console, I suppose.
My apologies. The correct ".config" file is included below.

Removing ~/.elisa/ solved the problem for me, so this seems to be some
missing backwards-compatability / configuration parsing failure
handling.
