After 3 months, I finally figured it out. enabling url rewrite enables
the "Block hotlinked items" options. The list of approved referers
includes only the *hostname* of the gallery by default.My server
config runs on a nonstandard port, so when I added hostname:port to the
list, it worked.

Are you running getty on tty8? Pppstatus redirects stdin to /dev/null in
daemon mode: it can't see anything you type on that console. What happens
if you type something other than Control+PrintScreen?
