ssh server immediately closing connection

Attempting to connect using blah@1.2.3.4 (the user and IP address have been obfuscated), the first time I'm prompted to accept the host's fingerprint and, after I do, the connection is immediately closed.  Trying again I get an immediate "Connection closed by 1.2.3.4 port 22".  I have tried both
