transferred the code from an old linux PC
via a DOS floppy, and when i tried to rename before all I got was:
$ mv MAKEFILE Makefile
mv: `MAKEFILE' and `Makefile' are the same file
so I assumed (wrongly it seems) that cygwin was at times case insensitive,
