Thorsten, don't use Microsoft Windows style of pathnames! Use POSIX compliant
pathnames.
E.g. Do the following
$ cd /cygdrive/c/Program\ Files
or alternatively try
$ cd "`cygpath -u "C:\Program Files"`"
Note the backslash is to escape the space in the pathname in the 1st case,

Hi Tatayna,
Few questions, are you a geek? Whats your favorite Linux distro and do
you know how to compile from source? If you can answer this, the whole
cygwin community will fall in line for you :D

Hi Jesper,
If I follow the instructions on the line you provided below, and burn a CD
with that custom installation, what do users have left to do to get a
working installation on their machine?
Just copying from the inst CD to a local drive would not suffice, would it?

Dear Igor,
I guest there were no improvements on the execute permission problem.
But I just realized that "vi" under cygwin is smart enough
not to give execute permissions to the files it writes
out. It simply keep the original permissions. Why can't gvim
do the same?

Chee,
Well, there are people on this list who are more versed in Windows
permissions issues than I, and hopefully they'll intervene and either
confirm or refute my answer. If I had to guess, I'd say this has to do
with inheritable permissions -- if a directory has an execute permission

Dear Igor,
Nice to hear from you, and thanks for the clarification!
I understand your explanation of the difference between
gvim and vim. But there is still a mystery.
In my previous installation of cygwin, no such problems
arise. The difference is that my previous system was Windows 2000

Well, for starters, you'll need to put a better subject line on your posts.
You might want to peruse

Yes you can tell it to install from a specified location or locally. When
you run the install you will see the options. Just run the install on your
server or whatever box you want the install files to be available
from. Then tell the system you want to install it from where to get the
