Is there some way within cygwin to successfully mount a share that
requires a password. Until I run the "net use" command or other
Windows application to open the share with the password Cygwin is
unable to access it. The best I've come up with so far is to run the
"net use" from my .bashrc. Is the

If you're looking to try out a Linux environment I'd recommend burning
one of the Live CD variants of Linux (http://www.livecdlist.com/) and
booting it. As has been said before on this list, Cygwin is not Linux,

Look at /etc/profile where it runs the profile.d scripts.
The scripts are run with standard input redirected to a here document
generated by a find command. That is the source of the
"/etc/profile.d/xinit.sh" you're seeing as the answer. The "read"
statement in your script is actually consuming on

Before 1.7.x came out I had sshd working under cygwin. After upgrading
it stopped working. I investigated and found the hosts.allow file and
made the recommended change there. That got my server working to the
point where I can "ssh localhost" and see the hungry-hungry-hippo. :)

It looks like some folks have already had graphical ideas. When you
look at the Message Of The Day (/etc/motd) you'll find an ASCII art
hippo. Searching the net for "cygwin hippo" doesn't reveal any clues
for the significance of the hippo for the community (anyone care to

Not sure why it line wrapped the second comment when I sent this. The
part reading "using DOS style paths." is part of the comment line
