Hi,
Yep, the new rxvt (-12) doesn't do so well with clear type. I
tracked through the code and figured out why. Looks like windows
erases a little bit more background than it should when writing
text in opaque mode. Changed the XDrawString code to use transparent
mode and to manually do the ba
After more investigation of the problem system, I found that I cannot
install other programs as well. Or I can install but then not run them
without a crash. It would appear that the XP installation on my system is
damaged. I believe this has nothing to do with cygwin's setup whatsoever.
Sorry
setup.exe is crashing on one of my systems with Windows XP. I tried with
both stock XP Pro and with it patched to SP1. This is a freshly installed
system with only a couple of hardware drivers installed (nVidia Detonator
for instance) and no other applications running at the time. Also, this is

First of all, you should always make efforts to be sure that your CVS files
are stored using the *UNIX* line ending conventions, whether you are using a
client on DOS/Windows or not, whether your CVS server is running on
DOS/Windows or Unix. If you do not, you *will* have trouble with diffs, and

Alex,
The /etc/passwd looks ok (assuming you have no users other than the
adminstrator). Is it readable by the administrator?
This could have happened if you've introduced ntsec into your CYGWIN
environment variable, and your /etc/passwd wasn't readable by the
administrator. Also, the `pwd` look
Hello all,
I just used the cygwin setup program to install gcc on my d: drive on
my windows 2000 professional pc.
The install seemed to go fine. From the command line I can get the
version of gcc:
bash.exe-2.02$ gcc -v
Using builtin specs.
gcc version egcs-2.91.57 19980901 (egcs-1.1 release)

A lot of the weirdness in configure and make is due to the weird
non-autoconf configure script used at the top level. I'm working on
autoconfiscating it, though it takes a while. This probably accounts for
the missubstitution in the Makefile, and some of the false negatives.

The first surprise was that everything (configure, make-bootstrap,
make-check) worked! That's a surprise because it was consistantly
failing only a few days ago and I didn't notice anything changing except
the phase of the moon.
The following observations may not be bugs (except the first).
I was trying to use setup to uninstall some Cygwin components,
because the machine was running out of space.
So I ran setup, intending to uninstall the TeX components. I
expanded the tree view, and in each of the categories in which the
TeX bits and pieces appeared (3 places), I selected Uninsta
Suggestion: include a shortcut for rxvt as well as for Cygwin, as part
of setup.exe?
rxvt is an excellent replacement for the Windows command window -
except that programs like vi seem to be expecting ^H for backspace,
whereas the key is actually sending a Del (^?), it seems.
The solution seems

Actually, Cyg CVS (afaik) determines line termination defauls based on
the cyg dll, and user-defined mounts that the check-out are done to.
I've found this as we have a number of developers using cyg/cvs who have
set up mounts in a number of creative ways (not according to docs, etc.)

Hello,
I encountered problems concerning the installation of expat (1.95.4-1).

the script breaks with:
