I am running Ubuntu 14.04 on bare metal, and yet compiz is eating CPU and desktop effects are slow IF the cpu loaded with something, even if the load is niced. I've tried the UNITY_LOW_GFX_MODE=1 compiz setting above and it makes no difference. I am running stock intel drivers on Haswell c/gpu.
