I believe this has already been fixed in later versions ob GNU make.
Please try the latest (3.79.1) and see if you continue to see the problem.

Dear Madams and Sirs,
the attached zip includes a core file and a makefile.
after unzipping, there should be a directory named make-core
cd make-core
make
make throws an assertion and core-dumps ( segmentation fault ).
Its not a typical makefile, but it should not core-dump.
