This happends every the time I run make -j to me.
I also built and tried make 3.80 from ftp.gnu.org with the same result:
parent make tries to build the object file before
the child exited, thus before the prerequisite exists.
All my systems are Linux BTW.

Please try it with GNU make 3.80. If it only happens occasionally it
might be a manifestation of a bug that was fixed in 3.80.
