You can't make it because ar is a system utility (the library archive
creator, the thing that creates libXXX.a files). It is not a part of
GNU make.

(one in the wrong subdirectory).

The easy way to see what make thinks the value is, is to run make with
the -p option.
Not only will you see the internal value, but you'll see where make
found that value (file name and line number).

My link line appears to pull in $(llines_LDADD),
but with a couple of tokens dropped from it,
which I don't understand. I'm no make expert, and
I'm certainly open to suggestions :)
