Because these commands failed, nothing changed in booting my Debian.

I believe that I commented on this in another thread, but I figured
I should put this into a new thread because it is its own topic and
it might apply to someone else.
I am trying to run Debian/Hurd on qemu, specifically qemu-system-i386.
The command that I am running it with is:

Follow up:
If the project at hand causes too many issues, I can work on something
else. I am really just looking for something that I can get started on. If
there is a better alternative, then I would like to do that.
