Trying to get a basic installation working

I spent a while yesterday trying to get an installation going on a fairly standard Intel P4 system, but was consistently getting a kernel panic shortly after selecting a mirror or, if I skipped that, shortly after Tasksel was run. The CD image I was using was $ cksum *iso 4089521537 678834176
