Hi all,
I can verify that these steps work.
I used the tarball from Debian's GNU/Hurd K8 mini-iso and followed the
rest of the steps to create an iso image. I wrote the resulting iso
to cd, and it booted up on a real system (not qemu) to a single user
shell, just like Andrew's screenshot shows.

We have managed to make a bootable GNU cd! It does require a patch to
isofs which Alfred should be sending to bug-hurd. There are still some
issues to be worked out, but it should be at least usable as an install
environment. There is also a patch needed for mach so that we do not
need the root
