Nick, the latest snapshot doesn't have the issue:

Answering my own question:
Git says the fix is included in gdb-7.9+ but there're no official releases of
binutils with it:
➜ binutils-gdb git:(master) git tag --contains
d840c081f8082e8b9e63fead53066439
