Backported, build-tested with binutils 2.39, 2.40 and 2.41 and it works
correctly.

To rebuild libgeos only from scratch:
# make V=1 libgeos-dirclean libgeos
also if you want to reissue make again only:
# make V=1 libgeos-rebuild

I've given a try to build libgeos and it still doesn't link, but then we're
facing 2 different bugs and I've mixed them up.
With libgeos it's true that linker hangs on assert() but before i
