It looks like Ubuntu did not supply the latest version, although I installed it
only some week ago.. this is what I have:
ld --version
GNU gold (GNU Binutils for Ubuntu 2.2

Which version of gold are you using? You gave the version number of the
coreutils, but that is not the package that gold is in. What does ld --version
report? There are fixes
